Santa Barbara, California – Hawaii’s women’s soccer team scored a hard-fought point on the road in a 0-0 draw against UC Santa Barbara in Thursday’s Big West action, earning their second consecutive shutout.
Reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Marquez They finished with five saves to lead the Rainbow Wahine defense, who kept a clean sheet in their second straight game. UH goes back to the Portland State game where he has not allowed a goal in 219 straight minutes, but his October 2019 is the first time Bowes has recorded consecutive shutouts.
Both teams had great chances to take the lead in the closing minutes of the game, but were unable to break through. From there, the pressure increased on the offensive end, who had three shots on goal in the last four minutes of the first half, all of which were saved by Marquez. The incumbent Big West Defensive Player of the Week made saves in the 36th, 37th and 39th minutes to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, Rainbow Wahine had the first opportunity to strike when Gilbert fired a slightly widened shot from the edge of the box. In the 62nd minute, Marquez made his fourth save, fending off a UCSB chance following a Giem shot on goal.
The result tied Hawaii in the conference standings with four points, and even tied with Long Beach State through two games. Thursday’s game also marked his second straight game in which UH and UCSB tied scoreless.
Marquez’ shutout was her third of the season, fifth of her career, and the first time a graduate student has recorded back-to-back shutouts. Rainbow She leads the Big Her West, allowing only her six goals in the season as Wahine also.
UH concludes its first conference road trip of the season in Calpoli on Sunday at 9am HT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
