NEW BEDFORD — The Drawing Room is curated with unique pieces that customers cannot necessarily find in other stores. That’s why Aidil Timas Grogan’s designs are perfect for your shop.
Grogan, owner of Arcane By Aidil Timas, said: The recently relocated shop on William Street was the first to debut the Grogan line of dresses and handbags.
“It’s been a good opportunity to put my stuff out there,” she said. “It’s my work of art. I love it when someone appreciates it. It makes me so happy.”
Hailing from Cape Verde, Grogan uses upcycled materials inspired by African patterns and textiles.
“I love making dresses, but I make everything. It depends on my inspiration,” she said. It’s a work of art.”

Over the past year, Grogan said he made at least 20 outfits and about 50 handbags. She recently debuted her own line at a fashion show in Providence.
She also loves restoring and upcycling antique furniture.
Designing a dress for the first time at the age of 12
Grogan, who grew up in a house where his mother, grandmother, and aunt sewed and tailored clothes, said he used to hide under tables and steal fabric to design clothes for his dolls.
At the age of 12, she designed and embroidered her first church dress.
“I love embroidery and crochet and was interested in learning everything I wanted to know.”
In 1994, after the birth of her first child, she moved to Portugal to work with a designer named Annette for her fix.
“I’ve seen her career and I’ve seen her sketching. I’ve seen her making patterns on mannequins. So it’s all like college to me.” It was something,” she said.

Annette not only inspired Grogan, but also inspired her to go to fashion design school.
“I wasn’t taking it very seriously at the time. I was still thinking about what to do with my life,” she said. “And when someone tells you that you’re good at this, you suddenly pay attention.”
In 2003, Grogan moved to Rhode Island and soon met her current husband, John Grogan. A mother of six, she launched her Arcane in 2014 and moved to New Bedford from New Hampshire in April 2022. She has not returned to her native Cape Verde since arriving in her 2003.
She said that without her family, she would not be able to create her own designs. “I need to feel at peace and happy with them so I can focus on my art. This is like a kind of therapy for me…for my soul, my heart. takes you to another place.”
Sailing by day, dress by night
By day Grogan works full time at Sperry Sails in North Dartmouth making sails for sailboats. At night, Grogan takes over her kitchen her table, transforms her dining room into her design studio, and takes her family to her TV area for dinner.
“Maybe in the future I’ll find a better place to work,” she said, adding that she’s eyeing the Kilburn Mill studio.
Anthi Frangiadis, owner of The Drawing Room, said: “We already have some of her work for sale, and it’s fun to add her wearable component to our artistic collection.”

Frangiadis said she has curated the shop with unique pieces that customers cannot find anywhere else in New Bedford, and each piece is one-of-a-kind and handcrafted.
“I make it for myself first. I have to love the work, so when I make it, I expect people to see it when they see it,” Grogan said. Added.
“You must love first before you can give to someone else.”
