Chelsea 2-0 Manchester City: Blues take first win of WSL season

Chelsea lost 2-1 to Liverpool in the Women’s Super League season opener.

Chelsea bounced back from their opening day defeat with a win over rivals Manchester City, who have yet to win a win this season.

After a fast-paced Chelsea counter-attack, Fran Kirby drove home a low cross from Gro Leyten, much to the delight of a packed Kingsmeadow.

City outperformed the defending champions with big spells, but sloppy defense let them down.

England midfielder Kirby has been involved in 34 goals in his last 20 WSL appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing 13 assists.

Fan favorite Kirby would once again impress England manager Salina Wiegman as she watched from the stands.

The striker’s show was lively, shooting from long range and claiming dominance in the air. Meanwhile, Chelsea goalkeeper Anne Catrin his Burger, making his first appearance since being treated for recurrent thyroid cancer, was slammed by Laura his Coombs.

Chelsea’s Lauren James could have also caught Wiegman’s eye, putting on an impressive display after many predicted she would be the breakout star of the season.

City were dominant in the first half, but their defence was disorganized and Kirby put the visitors to the breaking point with a timed goal just before half-time.

In the second half, Chelsea had the upper hand. James drove into the box from halfway just over his line and saw Ellie’s low back successfully save her shot. Kirby, on the other hand, had a chance to double his lead, but he shot over the bar.

Leila Uahavi’s handball that led to the penalty may have been soft, but it was the just reward for Chelsea’s dominance in the second half.

The hosts are currently unbeaten by City in 11 WSL matches, with five wins and six draws.

Show why Chelsea are the defending champions

After Chelsea lost 2-1 to promoted Liverpool in the season opener, manager Emma Hayes said her side “couldn’t run into the barn door”.

We missed chances again in the first half. Sam Kerr should have scored in the first minute, but just missed Kirby’s cutback.

Chelsea then looked sure to break the deadlock when Kerr was caught by Steph Horton’s loose pass to Roebuck. However, the opportunity was missed as Carr passed to Kirby instead of shooting himself and the England midfielder failed to get the shot.

When Kirby scored, it was mostly against the flow of play.
